Tower Bridge

This is the famous Tower Bridge. There is one picture while I was on it, and another from far away. Many times people get Tower Bridge mixed up with London Bridge. Actually, London Bridge is one bridge over and is much simpler.

England obviously speaks English, however there are some words that are used differently or more frequently than the way we use them in America. For example...

America    -     England

cell phone   -     mobile.
French fries    -    chips
soccer       -     football.
trash          -     rubbish/litter
coworker   -    colleague
line            -     queue
opinion      -    comment
row           -      fight

to go (in a restaurant)    -    take away

Palace of Westminister

The Palace of Westminister is where parliament meets. England has a two house parliamentary government. There is the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The government have been meeting here since the middle ages! The current building, although the architectural style seems older, was rebuilt in 1840 because a fire burned down the original building. The current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is David Cameron.

London Eye

The London Eye, also known as the Millennium Wheel, is a giant Ferris wheel located in the center of London. It is a great way to survey the city. When it first opened back in the year 2000, it was the world’s tallest Ferris Wheel. Now its only the tallest Ferris Wheel in Europe, but regardless the views of the city were amazing.

Here I am inside the Eye. Check out that view!

London Underground

The main way people get around London is through public transportation. The subway system in London, officially called the London Underground, is usually referred to by locals as the “Tube.” This is a sign showing the destination of the current stop.

British Pound Sterling

England uses the British Pound Sterling. 1 US dollar is currently equal to about 0.59 Pounds. Pictured here is a 20 pound banknote, a ten pound banknote, and a 50 pence coin, together they amount to about 51 US dollars.

Revised Itinerary

Because my flights experienced many lengthy delays, I ended up being forced to revise my schedule. However instead of getting upset over the weather, I instead adapted and problem solved. After a lengthy conversation with a travel agent, I was able to switch my flights. Now instead of starting off in Dublin, I will now fly into London. I will be there for about five days and then I will head over to Liverpool. I promise that I will eventually make it to everywhere I originally mentioned, just not in the original order. I will be sure to keep you updated!
