Newspapers

Every evening near the subway stations one of London's most popular newspapers, The Evening Standard, is given out for free. I have been getting a copy every night to read. There have been many interesting articles in the local news sections. If I was reading this newspaper at home, I probably would have passed over these articles. But since I am actually in London, where these things are happening, it makes everything much more real. So, here are two summaries of articles that I read that I would like to share.

There is a man in London who recently became the first person from London to have to wear a "US-style sobriety bracelet." The man was recently convicted for causing a fight outside of a nightclub. the bracelet tests the wearer's sweat every 30 minutes and if there are traces of alcohol in it, the police are alerted. I found this interesting because I didn't even know these kind of bracelets existed.

Also, there are trials currently being done on london buses involving radar systems. The purpose of these trials is to see if the equipment is effective in detecting cyclists located in buses' blindspots. This is a good move I think considering I've witnessed a few close calls between cyclists and motor vehicles already in the short time that I've been in the city.
